1. (Abstract Noun) a vowel sound that changes its quality within a single syllable; a combination of two vowel sounds where the articulation begins from the first one and goes towards the other but stops before exactly reaching/articulating the second sound, therefore partially articulating the second. e.g. /ei/ in day or the 'oi'sound in boy.There are eight diphthongs in English.
