2. (Common Noun-Common) spirit of a person who has died a natural death. The Dimasas believe in the rebirth and that a soul of the deceased takes birth in somebody’s house of his offsprings or clan. This is kwown when the baby cries for long, does not want to have food or is always angry. On noticing it, the village charmer is called to the house to determine as to who has overpowered the baby’s soul. on determination, necessary ritual is done to satisfy the soul. This is called ‘simang gaba’ or ‘simang naiba’. ‘simang garba’ offering of food to the dead at the mangklong or the funeral site in the evening and evening till the final funeral rites are performed or ‘maimu tarba’ is done. ‘simang jiba’ offering of food to the forefathers in ceremonies like busu (harvest festival), disengba’ (marriage), nana biseng jiriba’(giving first rice to the child) etc. The animal meat is cooked spaecially and offered to the souls by the middle aged and elderly women and then taken by them only. ‘simang songba’ cooking for the simang rituals. the cooking etc. are done by the middle aged and elderly women only.
