2. (Common Noun-Neuter) Swifts are highly specialized, generally fast flying, aerial foragers that rarely come to earth except at nest or roost sites. They are superficially similar to swallows but are actually not closely related to those passerine species at all. Swifts are in the separate order Apodiformes, which they formerly shared with the hummingbirds.
